FASTag status and balance: what to check before travelling

Understand available FASTag balance, issuer and status by vehicle number, why an active tag can differ from wallet balance, and when to contact the bank.

How to check FASTag by vehicle number

Open the FASTag page, enter your full registration number and choose the lookup button. Complete the background verification and read the returned issuer, tag reference, status and balance where available.

A missing balance is shown as unavailable rather than silently replaced with zero. A zero value and an omitted value mean different things. The vehicle number helps match the record, but it does not sign you into the bank account or authorise a recharge.

  • Check that the registration number matches your vehicle.
  • Identify the issuing bank or issuer.
  • Read the exact status returned for the tag.
  • Compare the available balance with your issuer’s current account view.

Balance and tag status should be read separately

Do not turn a minimum recharge figure into a guaranteed activation threshold. The amount needed for a journey depends on your account and travel, and this lookup does not calculate every toll or guarantee acceptance at a plaza.

If FASTag is blacklisted, blocked or low balance

IHMCL’s FASTag guidance identifies issuer-side restrictions and advises checking the reason with the issuing bank. Insufficient balance can be one cause; it is not the explanation for every blocked tag. Contact the issuer with the tag and vehicle references.

After a recharge or account correction, confirm the current status through the issuer. Vehicle Details cannot remove a restriction, update KYC or close a tag. A refreshed third-party result does not replace the bank’s account record.

A short checklist before a toll journey

If you bought a used car, ask how the existing FASTag will be handled rather than assuming the previous owner’s account transfers with the vehicle. Keep registration transfer and FASTag account management as separate tasks.

For help, start with the issuer identified in your own documents or account. Avoid entering bank credentials into a site simply because it appears in a search result for FASTag recharge.

  • Use the issuer’s current app or portal to check balance and recent activity.
  • Keep the recharge confirmation if you recently topped up.
  • Resolve any tag restriction with the issuer.
  • Check the vehicle number associated with the account.
  • Use the official issuer channel for replacement, KYC or closure requests.

Questions about this check

Can I recharge FASTag here?

The current site looks up available information. Use your issuer’s service for recharge and account management.

Does active mean the balance is sufficient?

No. Status and balance are separate fields. Check the current account and travel requirements with your issuer.

Why is the balance missing?

The provider may not have supplied it. An unavailable balance is not treated as zero.
