How the Sarathi Parivahan Online LL Exam Works
The computer knowledge test conducted by state transport departments under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) 1989 is the first mandatory gateway to obtaining an Indian Driving Licence. The exam tests your visual recognition of traffic signs, road markings, right-of-way intersection priorities, and penal provisions under the amended Motor Vehicles Act.
1. Mandatory Regulatory Signs
Circular signs with red borders (Speed limits, No Entry, Overtaking bans) and special shapes like octagonal STOP signs. Violating these is punishable under Section 177 / 179 MVA.
2. Right of Way & Intersections
Priority from the right at uncontrolled crossroads, pedestrian zebra crossing mandates, emergency vehicle corridors (Section 194E), and hill gradient right-of-way.
3. Hand Signals & Etiquette
Driver arm signals when indicators fail, traffic police hand gestures, nighttime headlight dipping to prevent blinding glare, and blind spot shoulder check routines.
Aadhaar Faceless Test Requirements
- Webcam Proctoring: Ensure your computer camera or smartphone front camera is clean and well-lit. AI face detection flags unauthorized bystanders or head turns away from the screen.
- Browser Lockdown: Do not switch tabs, minimize the browser window, or open background applications during the test, as this will trigger an automatic security cancellation.
- Form 1-A Medical Fitness: If you are applying for commercial transport endorsements or are 40 years of age or older, verify that your Form 1-A medical certificate has been uploaded digitally via the Sarathi Doctor Portal.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How many questions are asked in the Sarathi Parivahan Learner's Licence test?+
Most state RTOs conduct a 15-question (or 20-question in select states like Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu) computer test. You are given 30 to 45 seconds per question.
What is the passing score for the online LL computer test?+
The standard qualifying mark set by MoRTH is 60%. In a 15-question test, you must answer at least 9 questions correctly. In a 20-question test, you must answer at least 12 correctly.
Can I take the Learner's Licence test from home without visiting the RTO?+
Yes. Under MoRTH's faceless contactless governance guidelines, applicants who authenticate via Aadhaar e-KYC can take the AI webcam-proctored test from home on their computer or mobile browser.
What happens if I fail the online Learner's Licence test?+
If you fail, you can re-attempt the test after paying a nominal re-test fee (typically ₹50) on Sarathi Parivahan, usually after a cooling period of 24 to 48 hours depending on your state transport rules.
What is the validity period of a Learner's Licence (Form 3)?+
A Learner's Licence is valid for 6 months across India from the date of issue. You can apply for a permanent Driving Licence (DL) after 30 days of holding the LL.
Do I need to retake the driving test if my permanent DL expires?+
Under the amended Section 15(4) of the Motor Vehicles Act, the grace period is 1 year (365 days). If you apply to renew your licence more than 1 year after expiry, you must retake both the knowledge test and the practical test afresh on an Automated Driving Test Track (ADTT).
